Luongo Restaurant Fire kills six firefighters.
November 15, 1942
The fire at 12 – 16 Maverick Square kills hosemen Francis Joseph Degan, John Foley, Edward Franklin Macomber, Peter Felix McMorrow, Malachi Francis Reddington and ladderman Daniel Edward McGuire. It also injures more than 40 other people, and destroys the 100-year-old Lyceum Hall building in Maverick Square. Although one of the worst fire tragedies in Boston history, it is almost forgotten when an even worse fire strikes a nightclub in downtown Boston two weeks later.* A memorial to the slain firefighters at 20 Maverick Square is dedicated on November 15, 2012.
